Easter on the Courthouse Square

Jan Gunter
Community Relations Specialist

Every year Opelika's Parks & Recreation staff puts on an amazing “egg-tivities” event on Courthouse Square in downtown Opelika on the Saturday before Easter called “Easter on the Square”. This year is no exception! It's absolutely FREE and it is fun for the whole family!

The festivities begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 3 rd with all sorts of arts and crafts fun for children in 2 nd grade and younger. Kids will be able to make parade decorations, hats, Bunny-ears, vests, ties or bonnets. They will be able to have their picture made with the Easter Bunny, enjoy cotton candy, lemonade, and cookies. And there will be storytellers there with interesting stories to tell!

At 10:45 a.m. everyone can join the Easter Bunny, the Easter Egg, the Baby Egg, and the Easter Chicken for an old fashioned Easter parade around Courthouse Square, where they can show off their bonnets and other Easter crafts made earlier! (Adults please note that you must accompany all children parade participants!).

And then, at 11 a.m. the GIANT EGG HUNT will begin! Courthouse Square will be divided up into sections for each age group, including special sections for toddlers, pre-school and school age children! Parents of school aged children need to know that you will NOT be allowed into the areas to “help” your kids! They must hunt for their eggs and other candies on their own! There will be over 25,000 eggs to be gathered!

National Library Week

National Library Week will be a busy one across the country, and Opelika's Lewis Cooper Jr. Memorial Library will join in on all of the fun – and we hope you will help us celebrate this great week of activities.

During this week the Friends of the Library will have a special book sale. Along with that, bags can be purchased for $5 and can be filled once for free.

On April 12 th there will be a special “story time” featuring a “Big Read” themed event that Children's Librarian Tim Cooper is putting together (so you know it will be awesome!).

In recognition of National Library Week, Cooper Library will have “Food for Fines” the whole month of April. What is that? Any time during the month of April that you forget to get borrowed materials back into the library on time, instead of paying the normal 25 cents per item, per day, fine you can simply bring in either a canned good or a non-perishable food item for each overdue item you bring back! (This will not “forgive” existing fines prior to the month of April).

Just a reminder…

It's important for everyone to fill out their census! If you haven't already done so, please do our community a favor and fill it out and turn it in! If you didn't receive a census form, you can pick one up at Cooper Library, Greater Peace Baptist Church, or Covington Rec. Center. Also, the mayor's office has a few forms available in our offices! For more information on the location of any of these places, just call Jan Gunter at (334) 705-5136.

Carver Primary has Family Reading Night

Over 200 parents and children attended Family Reading Night at Carver Primary.  Parents learned many new strategies to use with their children at home to help them become better readers.  Teachers taught the parents strategies for helping with vocabulary and encouraged them to ask questions to their children about books they have read.  Many parents commented about how worthwhile and productive the sessions were.  In addition, parents were given "take home packets" to guide them through the process of teaching better reading skills at home.

Readers, be on the lookout in every other issue of the Opelika Observer for your chance to win $50!

Special to the Opelika Observer

The Opelika Middle School Soccer team defeated the Auburn Junior High School /Drake soccer team 3-2 at Duck Samford Park on Tuesday night. AJHS/Drake got on the board first midway through the first half to take a 1-0 lead. However, Opelika forward Khalil Bell slipped a shot by the Auburn goalie just before halftime to tie the score 1-1. Adrien Parker got the assist. The second half began much like the first with the Tigers taking the lead back 2-1. The Bulldogs battled back as Khalil Bell knotted the score at 2-2 as blasted a shot into the back of the net. Jorge Herrera assisted on the play. Jorge Herrera gave the Bulldogs the lead for good when he took a pass from Oliver Strickland and drilled a shot past the keeper. The Bulldog defense led by Vixene Mouangchan, Harrison Morris and Austin Brown kept the Tigers off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.
