dixie youth baseball opening day

By Lisa Salsman
Executive Editor

Spring has arrived and with it another season of Dixie Youth baseball. The league will hold its Opening Day ceremonies this Saturday, March 27th at West Ridge Baseball Park. Games will start at 9:30am. The Opening Ceremonies will begin at 11:45 to introduce the teams and their sponsors and to kick off the beginning of the season.

The Opelika Observer is proud to be the official Dixie Youth news source and will be running team pictures during each week of the season. We want to see your child's smiling face on the page, so make sure they arrive on time for pictures. Team pictures will be taken from 8:15 until 10:45, depending on which team the player is on, and must be purchased that day. Each packet is $10 and includes a 5x7 team photo, four 3x5 individual photos and four wallets. Even if you are not purchasing a packet, please make sure your child is there in uniform ten to fifteen minutes early, so that every player will be included in the team picture.

As many already know, there is a new board this year and they are fired up about this season. Ben Bugg, president of the board, says some of the league's overall goals for Opelika Dixie Youth this year include: being financially stable, upgrading the facilities at the park, including brand new batting cages, buying new equipment and providing a great place for kids to play ball.

To help the league meet some of their goals, they will have barbeque tickets for sale, as well as raffle tickets to win a new vehicle from Glynn Smith Chevrolet. Each barbeque ticket is $7.00 and each raffle ticket is $5.00. 100% of the proceeds from the raffle tickets will be returned to the league.

There is also a great menu this year for the concession stand. Burgers will be thick and tasty, according to Sammy Smith, who is in charge of the concessions. They will also offer jumbo hot dogs and polish dogs, boiled or roasted peanuts, slushies, nachos with peppers and chili, and all of the old favorites like bubble gum, chips and sunflower seeds. The prices are a steal, so plan to have lunch at the park on Opening Day.

If you have a player, there is a special for them. Player's Specials include a hamburger, chips and a canned drink for only $4.00 or a Grand Slam Dawg, chips and canned drink for only $2.50. Add an additional fifty cents if you prefer a PowerAde to a soda. Coaches can also take advantage of these specials.

And, while you're thinking about it, be sure to pick up your copy of the Opelika Observer. We will be adding another section to highlight Dixie Youth during the season and will include all kinds of information for your convenience. Look for our table on Opening Day and pick up your subscription or buy one for a grandparent who may live far away.

It's going to be a beautiful Saturday. We hope to see you there.
